Evening Prayer: Where Your Treasure Is: The Parable of the Two Sons

  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

Which brother are you: The one who says he will do the work his father asks but doesn’t; or the one who says NO, but then does the work? Jesus presents us with an interesting psychological and spiritual study in this brief but fascinating parable, one in which we may recognize ourselves.

We invite you to join us for a simple supper in our Fellowship Hall at 5:30 pm and Lenten Evening prayer at 6:15 in our beautiful Sanctuary at 200 East Main Street, Endicott, NY. Or, you can join us online here for our livestream (by clicking on the Youtube video), throughout both the Wednesdays and Sundays (10:30 AM) of Lent. UPC: always joyful, always welcoming.

One:  Jesus Christ, you are the light of the world,

All:  The light no darkness can overcome.

One:  Stay with us now, for it is evening,

All:  And the day is almost over.

One:  Let your light scatter the darkness,

All:  And shine within your people here.

Joyous light of heavenly glory,

Loving glow of God’s own face,

You who sing creation’s story,

Shine on every land and race.

Now as evening falls around us,

We shall raise our songs to you.

God of daybreak, God of shadows,

Come and light our hearts anew.

In the stars that grace the darkness,

In the blazing sun of dawn,

In the light of peace and wisdom,

We can hear your quiet song.

Love that fills the night with wonder,

Love that warms the weary soul,

Love that bursts all chains asunder,

Set us free and make us whole.

You who made the heaven’s splendor,

Every dancing star of night,

Make us shine with gentle justice,

Let us each reflect your light.

Mighty God of all creation,

Gentle Christ who lights our way,

Loving Spirit of salvation,

Lead us on to endless day.

One:  May God be with you all.

All:  And also with you.

One:  Let us sing our thanks to God.

All:  It is right to give God thanks and praise.

One:  ... you are the light and life of all creation.

All:  Amen.

Let my prayer rise up like incense before you,

The lifting up of my hands as an offering to you.

O God, I call to you, come to me now;

O hear my voice when I cry to you.

Let my prayer rise up like incense before you,

The lifting up of my hands as an offering to you.

Keep watch within me, God; deep in my heart

May the light of your love be burning bright.

Let my prayer rise up like incense before you,

The lifting up of my hands as an offering to you.

All praise to the God of all, Creator of life;

All praise be to Christ and the Spirit of love.

Let my prayer rise up like incense before you,

The lifting up of my hands as an offering to you.

Scripture Reading Matthew 21:28-32 NRSVUE

“What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ He answered, ‘I will not,’ but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same, and he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him, and even after you saw it you did not change your minds and believe him.

Response We live, not by bread alone,

but by every word that comes from God.

Thanks be to God!

Response:  God of mercy, hold us in love.

Final response:

One:  Help us, comfort us, all of our days:

All:  Keep us, hold us, gracious God.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our father in heaven,

Hallowed be your name,

Your kingdom come, your will be done,

On earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

As we forgive those

Who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

And deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

And the glory are yours,

Now and forever.  Amen.

Together we serve,
United by love,
Inviting God's world to the glorious feast.
We work and we pray
Through sorrow and joy,
Extending God's love to the last and the least.

We seek to become
A beacon of hope,
A lamp for the heart and a light for the feet.
We learn, year by year,
To let love shine through
Until we see Christ in each person we meet.

We welcome the scarred,
The wealthy, the poor,
The busy, the lonely, and all who need care.
We offer a home
To those who will come,
Our hands quick to help, our hearts ready to dare.

Together, by grace,
We witness and work,
Remembering Jesus, in whom we grow strong.
Together we serve
In Spirit and truth,
Remembering love is the strength of our song.
