Lent 4: Where Your Treasure Is: In the Family

  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

Something us going on here. Jesus’ family is outside, hammering to get in. What is going on? And what is this sick burn administered to his relatives by Jesus? Is he saying that his mother and siblings aren’t really his family?

Join us for Sunday morning worship in our beautiful Sanctuary at 200 East Main Street, Endicott, NY. Or, you can join us online here for our livestream (by clicking on the Youtube video), throughout both the Wednesdays (6:15) and Sundays (10:30 AM) of Lent. UPC: always joyful, always welcoming.

* Call to Worship
Bless to us, O God,

Each thing our eyes see.

Bless to us, O God,

Each sound our ears hear.

Bless to us, O God,

Each fragrance that goes to our nostrils.

Bless to us, O God,

Each taste that goes to our lips.

Each note that goes to our song,

Each ray that guides our way,

Each thing that we pursue,

Each lure that tempts our will,

The zeal that seeks our living souls,

The Three that seek our hearts,

The zeal that seeks our living souls,

The Three that seek our hearts.

* Hymn # 6

“I Bind Unto Myself Today”

(Public Domain)

I bind unto myself today
The strong name of the Trinity
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.

I bind this day to me forever,
By power of faith, Christ’s incarnation,
His baptism in the Jordan river,
His death on cross for my salvation,
His bursting from the spiced tomb,
His riding up the heavenly way,
His coming at the day of doom,
I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself today
The virtues of the starlit heaven,
The glorious sun’s life-giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea
Around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today
The power of God to hold and lead,
God’s eye to watch, God’s might to stay,
God’s ear to hearken to my need,
The wisdom of my God to teach,
God’s hand to guide, God’s shield to ward,
The word of God to give me speech,
God’s heavenly host to be my guard.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the name,
The strong name of the Trinity
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three,
Of whom all nature has creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word.
Praise to the Lord of my salvation;
Salvation is of Christ the Lord!

*  Call to New Life

As we rise to meet this new day, we call upon our Creator for the healing and hope we need.

* Prayer for Wholeness and Peace (unison)

Relieve, O God, each one

suffering on land or sea,

in grief or wounded or weeping,

in suffering of heart or body,

in suffering of conscience or soul;

those who are weary, weak, and cold,

weary of traveling on land or sea,

weary of traversing moors or billows,

grant them the repose of your heart.

~ Silent Prayer~

And we pray,

Beloved Father, accept and care for our tears;

grant us reconciling with you,

through the peace and witness of your Son.

Amen.

*  Words of Assurance

To be resting with Jesus in the dwelling of peace

is to know the joy of God, and see it written on our faces.

We thank you, O God, for the mantle of Christ,

the one who keeps us, our champion and our friend.

Thanks be to God! Amen.

* Sharing of the Peace

To be resting with Jesus in the dwelling of peace

is a paradise of gentleness.

May the peace of God be with you.

And also with you.

Let us share with one another a sign of God’s peace.

Scripture   Psalm 144:3-4, 12-15

Womb of Life, what is humanity that you even know them,

or the woman-born that you think of them?

Humanity is like a breath;

whose days are like a passing shadow.

Our sons in their youth are like plants full grown,

our daughters are like cornerstones, cut for the building of a palace.

Our barns are full, from produce of every kind;

our sheep have increased by thousands,

many thousands in our surroundings.

Our cattle are heavy, there is no breach in the walls, no exile,

and no cry of distress in our surroundings.

Happy are the people to whom such blessings fall;

happy are the people whose God is the Womb of Life.

In Christ’s name, we gather,

In God’s presence we rejoice,

In the Spirit, strangers and friends

Sing united as one voice,

Abounding in hope, rooted in love,

Assured by the gifts of God’s marvelous grace,

Believing in One that was sent from above,

We stand as a family of faith.

We’re traveling on life’s journey,

Finding our way by heaven’s wondrous light,

There is no burden carried alone

When we walk the way of Christ.

Abounding in hope, rooted in love,

Assured by the gifts of God’s marvelous grace,

Believing in One that was sent from above,

We stand as a family of faith.

Like instruments of a symphony,

Each one unique, yet all belong,

Through God we blend into harmony,

Together we are strong,

Hear our song!

Abounding in hope, rooted in love,

Assured by the gifts of God’s marvelous grace,

Believing in One that was sent from above,

We stand as a family,

We’re blessed as a family,

We stand as a family of faith.

Abounding in hope, rooted in love, Praise God!

Scripture  Matthew 12:46-50

While [Jesus] was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his siblings were standing outside, seeking to speak to him. Someone told him, “Look, your mother and your siblings are standing outside, seeking to speak to you.” But to the one who had told him this, Jesus said, “Who is my mother, and who are my siblings?” And pointing his hand to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my siblings! For whoever does the will of my Abba in the heavens is my mother and sister and brother.”

Response    Holy Wisdom, Holy Word.

Thanks be to God.

Sermon  “In the Family”

Affirmation of Faith for Lent

We believe in a God who so loves the world,

he came among us in Jesus:

Emmanuel, God-With-Us.

Deeply human and fully God,

Jesus was born of a woman.

He was called by God into a ministry

of teaching, feeding, and healing,

but first, he underwent a time of testing.

In the wilderness for forty days,

Jesus embraced the treasure

of his unwavering faith in God

and resisted the temptation

to use godly powers in self-service.

Jesus called a gathering of faithful individuals

to follow him and learn from him.

Understood fully by people on the margins

as a loving preacher, prophet, and healer,

Jesus was seen by those in power as a threat.

He was betrayed by one of his own,

was tried as a traitor to Rome,

and was nailed to a tree, where he died.

With his last breath

he commended his spirit into God’s hands.

Death could not hold back his power or his goodness;

on the third day he was raised to life by God almighty.

When at last he entered the heavenly realm,

he sent his Holy Spirit to be with us forever:

Emmanuel: God-With-Us.

* Hymn  # 802

“The King of Love My Shepherd Is”

(Public Domain)

The King of love my shepherd is,
Whose goodness faileth never;
I nothing lack if I am his
And he is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow
My ransomed soul he leadeth,
And where the verdant pastures grow,
With food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
But yet in love he sought me,
And on his shoulder gently laid,
And home, rejoicing, brought me.

In death's dark vale I fear no ill
With thee, dear Lord, beside me;
Thy rod and staff my comfort still,
Thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spread’st a table in my sight;
Thy unction grace bestoweth;
And O what transport of delight
From thy pure chalice floweth!

And so through all the length of days
Thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise
Within thy house forever.

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Eternal Spirit of the living Christ,

I know not how to ask or what to say;

I only know my need, as deep as life,

And only you can teach me how to pray.

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,

Whose trust, every childlike, no cares could destroy:

Be there at our waking and give us, we pray,

Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,

Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe:

Be there are our labors and give us, we pray,

Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,

Your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace:

Be there at our homing and give us, we pray,

Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,

Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm:

Be there at our sleeping and give us, we pray,

Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.
