Now as Paul was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” ~Acts 9:3-4

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered… Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. ~ Luke 2

On Sunday, December 8th at 3 p.m., Bill Carter and the Presbybop Christmas Eve Band will play here for Union’s Advent Jazz Vespers. The band will play jazz variations of seasonal favorites including a medley from “A Charlie Brown’s Christmas.” The congregation will sing a few Christmas carols from our blue hymnal but with jazzy accompaniments. It will last about an hour and will be followed by a reception in Fellowship Hall hosted by the Bicentennial Committee. This will be fun so invite your friends and neighbors.
Bill Carter, piano, was born in Owego, and is now the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, near Scranton. He writes and arranges music for the band, and leads from his piano. Bill’s church has an 11 p.m. Christmas Eve service every year with this band. Most of the pews are packed with church and community members as well as people from afar. Other members of the band are Tony Marino, bass, Tyler Dempsey on drums, Mike Carbone, sax, and Jeff Stockham, trumpet. Mike is local but the others are from Syracuse to Scranton. The band’s CD’s and DVD’s will be on sale in Fellowship Hall at the reception.
In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. ~ Ephesians 1:11-12
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away.
You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. ~ Psalm 139:1-3
This summer at UPC it will “take a village” to work on an all-congregational art project. Beginning in mid-June, anyone who can tie a knot can participate until the fabric mural is completed! Click through for more details…
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. ~ Acts 2:1-4

When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. ~ Deuteronomy 26:1-2

How lovely is your dwelling place,
O Lord of hosts!
My soul longs, indeed it faints
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh sing for joy
to the living God.
~Psalm 84:1-2
O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me. ~ Psalm 30:2

Do you remember that sixties rock foursome that changed the international pop music scene forever, before breaking up in 1970? Even casual listeners to the discography of the Beatles will notice a thread running through their music that speaks to a philosophical and spiritual journey. Did you know that John Lennon was deeply involved in a local church in Woolton, England for at least ten years? And that the fab four all had some religious/ theological education?
The book “The Gospel According to the Beatles” (Steve Turner, Westminster John Knox Press) is not trying to make the case that the Beatles were all secretly Christian. But it persuasively argues that themes arise in their songs that speak to universal human spiritual experiences. I think summer would be a great time to explore them!
Beginning Sunday June 24 we will delve into how a Beatles’ song and one or two passages of scripture can illuminate one another (and, hopefully, us!). I hope you will join us on this magical mystery tour!
June 24: “You Can’t Do That” 1 Samuel 17:32-49; Mark 4:35-41
July 1: “All You Need Is Love” Mark 6:1-6; 1 John 4:7-12
July 8: “In My Life” Psalm 130; 2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27
July 15: “Nowhere Man” Amos 7:7-13; Mark 6:14-29
July 22: “Carry That Weight” Jeremiah 23:1-6; Mark 6:30-34, 53-56
July 29: “Let It Be” 2 Kings 4:42-44; Ephesians 3:14-21
