Today we begin a two-week series on the book of Ruth, often considered a short novella or a work of historical fiction. Ruth is a foreigner, a Moabite (A much maligned group in the Old Testament), and she marries a man of Hebrew extraction. After his death, and her father-in-law’s death, she remains faithful to her mother-in-law—so much so, she forfeits everything: family of birth, homeland, even her religious background—in order to remain faithful. Where does this commitment take her, geographically and spiritually? How do two women survive in a world that intended them to be cared for by men?
