Welcome to the first Sunday of this summer’s preaching series, A Deeper Life. Designed by the good folks at Luther seminary (St. Paul, MN), these six weeks seek to help us all to answer the question, “How can we grow spiritually deeper?” Jesus’s answer is, simply, Love. Scripture tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8), and Jesus reminds us that loving God and loving one another is at the heart of the gospel.
The beauty of this series is that it will offer us all tangible ways to grow in our love, for both God and neighbor. These spiritual practices are simple to do and may give us opportunities for deepening our sense of connection with God, with neighbors, with the world, and even with ourselves.
Please join us this Sunday for our introduction to this series. Each Sunday you will take home, not only a message, but a practice— a spiritual practice to help you to deepen the love that is waiting to be shared with the world. You are invited to join us in our beautiful sanctuary at 200 East Main Street in Endicott. Or. if you wish, you can join our livestream from home or travel by clicking on the Youtube video below. You are always welcome!

* Call to Worship
O God, our Creator, we, your people, come to you.
We come to seek a deeper life.
O Jesus, our brother and friend, we, your people, call on you.
We call out to you, that you would show us your Way.
O Spirit of God, Holy Breath, we, your people, long for you.
We thirst for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
Holy Trinity of Faith, Hope, and Love, we, your people, rest in you.
We trust in you: lead us on.

My soul cries out with a joyful shout
That the God of my heart is great,
And my spirit sings of the wondrous things
That you bring to the ones who wait.
You fixed your sight on your servant’s plight,
And my weakness you did not spurn,
So from east to west shall my name be blest:
Could the world be about to turn?
My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near;
And the world is about to turn.
Thought I am small, my God, my all,
You work great things in me,
And your mercy will last from the depths of the past
To the end of the age to be.
Your very name puts the proud to shame,
And to those who would for you yearn,
You will show your might, put the strong to flight,
For the world is about to turn.
My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near;
And the world is about to turn.
From the halls of power to the fortress tower,
Not a stone will be left on stone.
Let the king beware for your justice tears
Every tyrant from his throne.
The hungry poor shall weep no more,
For the food they can never earn;
There are tables spread; every mouth be fed,
For the world is about to turn.
My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near;
And the world is about to turn.
Though the nations rage from age to age,
We remember who holds us fast:
God’s mercy must deliver us
From the conqueror’s crushing grasp.
This saving word that our forebears heard
Is the promise which holds us bound,
Till the spear and rod can be crushed by God,
Who is turning the world around.
My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near;
And the world is about to turn.
* Call to New Life
The practice of chattel slavery, and the ensuing laws and practices that continued to oppress people of color, may well be the original sin of these United States. In our prayer for Wholeness and Peace, we acknowledge both the sin and the good news of emancipation, even as we pray for the grace and strength to continue to be bearers of Christ’s good news in the world.
* Prayer for Wholeness and Peace
Almighty God, you rescued your people from slavery in Egypt, and throughout the ages you have never failed to hear the cries of the captives. We remember before you our sisters and brothers in Galveston, Texas who on this day received the glad tidings of their emancipation. Forgive us for the many grave sins that delayed that liberating word. Anoint us with your Spirit to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim the year of your favor. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
* Assurance of God’s Love From Romans 8
Who will separate us from the love of Christ?
I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers,
nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth,
nor anything else in all creation
will be able to separate us from the love of God
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Thanks be to God! Amen.
* Sharing of the Peace
God is with us when we stray and when we return.
God is near when we acknowledge our failures, and strive to do better.
May the peace of our loving God be with you.
And also with you.
Let us offer one another a sign of God’s peace.
Scripture
Psalm 1:1-3 NRSVUE
Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked
or take the path that sinners tread
or sit in the seat of scoffers,
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
They are like trees
planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.
Luke 6:43-45
“Indeed, no good tree bears bad fruit,
nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit.
For each tree by its own fruit is known.
Now, figs are not gathered from thorns,
nor from a thornbush are grapes picked.
The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good,
and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil,
for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.

Tree of Wisdom, fruitful, green,
Flourishing beside the stream;
Spread your knowledge day and night;
Make your law my true delight.
Fashion me, O Lord, to be
Strong and splendid as a tree.
Tree of Justice, ever bless;
Shade me with your righteousness.
Teach me how to live your ways,
And my lips shall sing your praise.
Fashion me, O Lord, to be
Ever branching as a tree.
Tree of Plenty, feed my soul;
Nurture me, and make me whole.
Give me strength, cast fear aside;
Let me in your love abide.
Fashion me, O Lord, to be
Firmly planted as a tree.
Tree of Promise, keep your vow:
With me then, and with me now.
Springtime blossoms, winter tears,
Mark the seasons of my years.
Fashion me, O Lord, to be
Always changing as a tree.
Like a forest all around,
So the gifts of grace abound:
Flowing waters, fertile sod,
Sunlit dawn, the Word of God.
Fashion me, O Lord, to be
Living, giving as a tree.
Scripture Mark 12:38-42
Now, one of the biblical scholars came near and heard them discussing with one another, and seeing that Jesus answered them well, the scholar asked Jesus, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Holy One our God, the Holy is one; you shall love the Holy One your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Then the biblical scholar said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that ‘God is one, and besides God there is no other’; and ‘to love God with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength’ and ‘to love one’s neighbor as oneself.’ This is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that the scholar answered wisely, he said, “You are not far from the reign of God.” After that no one dared to ask Jesus any question.
Response Holy Wisdom, Holy Word:
Thanks be to God!

* Affirmation of Faith From the Benedictus (Luke 1:68-79)
Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation,
you have come to your people and set them free.
You have raised up for us a mighty Savior,
born of the house of your servant, David.
Through your holy prophets, you promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us,
to show mercy to our forebears,
and to remember your holy covenant…
That we might be free to worship you without fear,
holy and righteous before you, all the days of our life.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

When Israel was in Egypt's land,
Let my people go;
Oppressed so hard they could not stand,
Let my people go!
Go down, Moses,
Way down in Egypt's land;
Tell old Pharaoh:
Let my people go!
"Thus saith the Lord," bold Moses said,
"Let my people go!
If not, I'll smite your firstborn dead.
Let my people go!"
Go down, Moses,
Way down in Egypt's land;
Tell old Pharaoh:
Let my people go!
"No more shall they in bondage toil:
Let my people go!
Let them come out with Egypt's spoil:
Let my people go!"
Go down, Moses,
Way down in Egypt's land;
Tell old Pharaoh:
Let my people go!
O let us all from bondage flee;
Let my people go!
And let us all in Christ be free:
Let my people go!
Go down, Moses,
Way down in Egypt's land;
Tell old Pharaoh:
Let my people go!
Prayers of the People
As we enter this Juneteenth holiday celebration, we offer prayers for ourselves and the world.
That those entrusted with authority in our nation may serve the common good and lead in a way that promotes healing in an authentic, responsible, and peaceful manner, we pray . . .
Hear us, O God, as we accept the call to be bearers of peace.
That the fullness of justice and compassion may be extended to the victims and families who have been subjected to violence, abuse, discrimination, murder, or the threat of the same, we pray...
Hear us, O God, as we accept the call to be bearers of peace.
Hear us, O God, as we accept the call to be bearers of peace. Intercessor: That our communities and our schools may find ways to actively participate in efforts to eliminate violence, especially violence against Black and brown people, so that this country may take the lead in fostering conditions for healing racial division, we pray...
Hear us, O God, as we accept the call to be bearers of peace.
That all who gather to mark Juneteenth be able to freely and peaceably, remember, reflect, and celebrate together, we pray...
Hear us, O God, as we accept the call to be bearers of peace.
That we may be courageous in living out the Gospel, we pray...
We pray, O Lord, for change. Jesus, you revealed God through your wise words and loving deeds, and we encounter you still today in the faces of those whom society has pushed to the margins. Guide us, through the love you revealed, to establish the justice you proclaimed, that all peoples might dwell in harmony and peace, united by that one love that binds us to each other, and to you. And most of all, Lord, change our routine worship and work into genuine encounter with you so that our lives will be changed for the good of all. We pray in the name of our liberator, Jesus Christ, and as he taught us to pray:
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

* Hymn # 339
“Lift Every Voice and Sing”
(Public Domain)
Lift every voice and sing till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty.
Let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies;
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us;
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on, till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died.
Yet, with a steady beat, have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our parents sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered;
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by thy might led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee;
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee;
Shadowed beneath thy hand may we forever stand,
True to our God, true to our native land.
