Evening Prayer: Where Your Treasure Is: The Parable of the Treasure

  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

At the end of his long list of instructions for living the righteous or just life, Jesus offers this tiny parable… where your treasure is, there will be your heart, also. What does it mean? How is it useful guidance for those of us hoping to live a life of connection to God and others?

We invite you to join us for a simple supper in our Fellowship Hall at 5:30 pm and Lenten Evening prayer at 6:15 in our beautiful Sanctuary at 200 East Main Street, Endicott, NY. Or, you can join us online here for our livestream (by clicking on the Youtube video), throughout both the Wednesdays (6:15 PM) and Sundays (10:30 AM) of Lent. UPC: always joyful, always welcoming.

One:  Jesus Christ, you are the light of the world,

All:  The light no darkness can overcome.

One:  Stay with us now, for it is evening,

All:  And the day is almost over.

One:  Let your light scatter the darkness,

All:  And shine within your people here.

Joyous light of heav’nly glory,

Loving glow of God’s own face,

You who sing creation’s story,

Shine on ev’ry land and race.

Now as evening falls around us,

We shall raise our songs to you.

God of daybreak, God of shadows,

Come and light our heart anew.

In the stars that grace the darkness,

In the blazing sun of dawn,

In the light of peace and wisdom,

We can hear your quiet song.

Love that fills the night with wonder,

Love that warms the weary soul,

Love that bursts all chains asunder,

Set us free and make us whole.

You who made the heaven’s splendor,

Ev’ry dancing star of night,

Make us shine with gentle justice,

Let us each reflect your light.

Mighty God of all creation,

Gentle Christ who lights our way,

Loving Spirit of salvation,

Lead us on to endless day.

Let my prayer rise up like incense before you,

The lifting up of my hands as an offering to you.

O God, I call to you, come to me now;

O hear my voice when I cry to you.

Let my prayer rise up like incense before you,

The lifting up of my hands as an offering to you.

Keep watch within me, God: deep in my heart

May the light of your love be burning bright.

Let my prayer rise up like incense before you,

The lifting up of my hands as an offering to you.

All praise to the God of all, Creator of life;

All praise be to Christ and the Spirit of love.

Let my prayer rise up like incense before you,

The lifting up of my hands as an offering to you.

Scripture Reading Matthew 6:19-21; 13:44-46 NRSVUE

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and reburied; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

Response We live, not by bread alone,

but by every word that comes from God.

Thanks be to God!

Response:  God of mercy, hold us in love.

Final response:

One:  Help us, comfort us, all of our days:

All:  Keep us, hold us, gracious God.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our father in heaven,

Hallowed be your name,

Your kingdom come, your will be done,

On earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

As we forgive those

Who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

And deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

And the glory are yours,

Now and forever.  Amen.

O God, you are my God alone,

Whom eagerly I seek,

Though longing fills my soul with thirst

And leaves my body weak.

Just as a dry and barren land

Awaits a freshening shower,

I long within your house to see

Your glory and your power.

Your faithful love surpasses life,

Evoking all my praise.

Through every day, to bless your name,

My hands in joy I’ll raise.

My deepest needs you satisfy

As with a sumptuous feast.

So, on my lips and in my heart,

Your praise has never ceased.

Throughout the night I lie in bed

And call you, Lord, to mind;

In darkest hours I meditate

How God, my strength, is kind.

Beneath the shadow of your wing,

I live and feel secure;

And daily as I follow close,

Your right hand keeps me sure.

One:  Let us bless our God:

All:  Praise and thanks to you.

One:  ... be our guide and path for all of our days.

All:  Amen.
