Jesus has a hard conversation with his inner circle—the disciples whose names we know. They are feeling acutely all that they’ve given up to follow him—homes, dependable incomes, family ties. They are wondering what they will get out of all this, in the end? Jesus then explains to them what today we might call “costly grace.”
