God Light 5: Send Me

  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

Jesus is with the fisherfolk, and he’s looking for people who are interested in signing on to his mission and ministry. But first, he will amaze them with a tremendous catch of fish.

Join us this morning for another glimpse of the ways in which God light shines through the words and actions of Jesus. Worship with us in our sanctuary, or join us right here online if you are traveling or joining us from home. God’s light is for you, too. You are invited!

Call to Worship                                                                                      Pat Sullivan

Jesus says to us: You are the light of the world!

You created our light, O God, that it might shine.

Jesus says to us, Come and see.

We are invited on an adventure like no other.

The Lord says, Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord; send me!

My Lord! what a morning;

My Lord! what a morning;

O, my Lord! what a morning,

When the stars begin to fall.

You’ll hear the trumpet sound

To wake the nations underground,

Looking to my God’s right hand

When the stars begin to fall.

My Lord! what a morning;

My Lord! what a morning;

O, my Lord! what a morning,

When the stars begin to fall.

You’ll hear the sinner cry

To wake the nations underground,

Looking to my God’s right hand

When the stars begin to fall.

My Lord! what a morning;

My Lord! what a morning;

O, my Lord! what a morning,

When the stars begin to fall.

You’ll hear the Christian shout

To wake the nations underground,

Looking to my God’s right hand

When the stars begin to fall.

My Lord! what a morning;

My Lord! what a morning;

O, my Lord! what a morning,

When the stars begin to fall.

Call to New Life

Prayer for Wholeness and Peace

Faithful God, you have appointed us your witnesses, to be light that shines in the world. But we hide the bright hope you have given us. We hesitate to share your love with others. We don’t want to be pushy. We don’t want to be annoying. So how do we do it? Can you help us? Help us, loving God, to share that bright hope, and tell everyone your love, revealed in Jesus the Lord. Together with the Spirit, you are one God, forever. Amen.

Assurance of God’s Love

God’s wisdom is deeper than the ocean;

God’s truth is brighter than the sun.

God’s mercy is everlasting;

God’s love is unfathomable.

God makes us a new creation;

God sends us out, to share God’s love with the world.

Thanks be to God! Amen.

Sharing of the Peace

The peace of Christ makes fresh our hearts,

a fountain ever springing!

May the peace of God be with you.

And also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of God’s peace.

Scripture               Isaiah 6:1-8

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”

Scripture               Luke 5:1-11

Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

Response             Holy Wisdom, Holy Word:

Thanks be to God!

Let me sow the seeds of life to a parched and dying land,

Watering with your words of love so that they will understand

That the love that God has shed upon us

Is a love that will never fade away.

Let me share it with the world.

I’ll go, I’ll be the one to go.

Here am I, send me.  Here am I, send me,

Until every nation knows the power of your love.

Give me a hunger to know where it is you want me to go.

Father, I’m saying here am I, send me.

There’s a need we cannot see ‘cause we’re blinded by our own.

Help us sense the suffering that they carry all alone.

Let me be the voice that’s giving answers to their need:

That Jesus is the truth, the life,

He’s the way, He is the only way.

Here am I, send me.  Here am I, send me,

Until every nation knows the power of your love.

Give me a hunger to know where it is you want me to go.

Father, I’m saying here am I, send me.

I will go where there’s a need.

I will go, Lord, send me.

I will go where you lead,

Even to the ends of the earth.

Here am I, send me.  Here am I, send me,

Until every nation knows the power of your love.

Give me a hunger to know where it is you want me to go.

Father, I’m saying here am I, send me.

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper

The Invitation

…The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

The Great Thanksgiving

…The splendor of your creation calls all to join with heaven and earth,

in an unending hymn of praise:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord,

God of power and might:

Heaven and earth are filled with your glory.

Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest!

The Words of Jesus

… Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith:

When we eat this bread and drink this cup

we proclaim the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus

until he comes in glory.

Invocation of the Spirit

Prayers of the People

Response: Lord, hear our prayer.

… Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

(Pause for silent prayer.)

Creator God,

you have promised through your beloved Son Jesus

that when two or three are gathered together in his name

you will be in the midst of them.

Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions

as may be best for us,

granting us in this world knowledge of your truth,

and in the age to come life everlasting.

We pray in the name of Jesus, and as he taught us, debtors, trespassers, and sinners together…

The Lord’s Prayer (Unison)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Loving God, your wisdom is deeper than the ocean; your truth is brighter than the sun; your mercy is everlasting; and your love is unfathomable.
