Call to Worship             Inspired by “Blessed” by Lucinda Williams          Kevin Kelley

We were blessed by the Maker
who created us in love.
We were blessed by the Baptist
who pointed to the One above.
We were blessed by the Teacher
who reached out to heal.
We were blessed by the Spirit
who remains among us still.
We are blessed.
We are blessed.

Great day! Great day, the righteous marching,
Great day! God's going to build up Zion's walls.

The chariot rode on the mountaintop,
God's going to build up Zion's walls.
My God spoke and the chariot did stop.
God's going to build up Zion's walls.

Oh, Great day! Great day, the righteous marching,
Great day! God's going to build up Zion's walls.

This is the day of Jubilee,
God's going to build up Zion's walls.
God shall set the people free.
God's going to build up Zion's walls.

Oh, Great day! Great day, the righteous marching,
Great day! God's going to build up Zion's walls.

Call to New Life

Prayer for Wholeness and Peace

God of all grace, we know that your love and care are the blessings of our lives, but we don’t always feel them. We can become stuck in the regrets of the past. We can be overwhelmed by the demands of the day. We can become paralyzed envisioning an unknowable future. Help us Lord! How can we go forward?

[silent prayer

God, you taught our ancestors in faith to lay down the regrets of the past. You taught them to greet the day with your name on their lips and your love in their hearts. You taught them that the future was yours alone to know. Let us go and do likewise, confident of your presence in each moment. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

Assurance of God’s Love

The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.

We are blessed to be a blessing.

The steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting.

We are blessed to be a blessing.

God is Love.

We are blessed to be a blessing. Thanks be to God! Amen.

Sharing of the Peace

May the peace of God be with you.

And also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of God’s peace.

Scripture               Jeremiah 17:5-8

Thus says the Lord:

Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals

    and make mere flesh their strength,

    whose hearts turn away from the Lord.

They shall be like a shrub in the desert,

    and shall not see when relief comes.

They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness,

    in an uninhabited salt land.

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord,
    whose trust is the Lord.
They shall be like a tree planted by water,
    sending out its roots by the stream.
It shall not fear when heat comes,
    and its leaves shall stay green;
in the year of drought it is not anxious,
    and it does not cease to bear fruit.

Scripture               Luke 6:17-26

He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them.

Then he looked up at his disciples and said:

“Blessed are you who are poor,
    for yours is the kingdom of God.

“Blessed are you who are hungry now,
    for you will be filled.

“Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.

“Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.

“But woe to you who are rich,
    for you have received your consolation.

“Woe to you who are full now,
    for you will be hungry.

“Woe to you who are laughing now,
    for you will mourn and weep.

“Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, longing for their Lord,

For God’s coming kingdom shall be theirs.

Blessed are the sorrowing, for they shall be consoled,

And the meek shall come to rule the world.

Lead me, Lord, lead me, Lord, by the light of truth

To seek and to find the narrow way.

Be my way; be my truth; be my life, my Lord,

And lead me, Lord, today.

Blessed are the merciful, for mercy shall be theirs,

And the pure in heart shall see their God.

Blest are they whose hunger only holiness can fill,

For I say they shall be satisfied.

Lead me, Lord, lead me, Lord, by the light of truth

To seek and to find the narrow way.

Be my way; be my truth; be my life, my Lord,

And lead me, Lord, today.

Blest are they who through their lifetimes sow the seeds of peace;

All will call them children of the Lord.

Blest are you, though persecuted in your holy life,

For in heaven, great is your reward.

Lead me, Lord, lead me, Lord, by the light of truth

To seek and to find the narrow way.

Be my way; be my truth; be my life, my Lord,

And lead me, Lord, today.

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

“Lord, I Want to Be a Christian”

(Public Domain)

Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart;

Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart.

In my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart.

Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart, in my heart;

Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart.

In my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart.

Lord, I want to be more holy in my heart, in my heart;

Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart.

In my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart.

Benediction

Go out into the world in peace;

have courage;

hold onto what is good;

return no one evil for evil;

strengthen the fainthearted;

support the weak, help the suffering;

honor all people;

Let us love and serve the Lord,

rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
