Power and Prayer

  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

Sometimes the argument about who’s in and who’s out comes even to this: who gets to heal? Jesus and his brother James seem to be in perfect harmony as we hear them talk about the power of prayer.

Join us this morning! We worship together at 10:30 AM in our sanctuary, live-streaming the service for those at home or on the road right here. You are invited!

Welcome Rev. Pat Raube

Call to Worship Jane Park

Our help is in the name of the Lord:

The One who made the heavens and the earth.

Our hope is in the Lord:

The One who is as near as our own breath.

Blessed be the Lord:

The One who heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds.

Hymn   #59  W & R

“Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”

(Public Domain)

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love;

Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away;

Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heaven reflect thy rays,

Stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,

Chanting bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee.

Thou are giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest,

Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!

Thou our Father, Christ our Brother—all who live in love are thine;

Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the happy chorus which the morning stars began;

Love divine is reigning o’er us, joining all within its span.

Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife;

Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life.

Call to New Life

Prayer for Wholeness and Peace

God of power and might, our hope is in you—in your powerful, life-giving love. We offer ourselves to you. Heal, we pray, the hurts we have known, the traumas we have survived, and the grief we have suffered. We ask your healing for all those things that have hardened our hearts, narrowed our vision, or left us feeling helpless and alone. Our hope is in you.

~ Silent Prayer ~

And we pray,

God of all goodness, hold us close. God of all kindness, pour your Spirit upon us. God of all hopefulness, let your gentle presence lead us again to abundant life. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Assurance of God’s Grace

Hear the Good News! Hope does not disappoint us.

God’s love has been poured into our hearts.

God is doing a new thing: now it springs forth!

God’s grace us poured out upon us day by day.

The steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting.

All is well. Let us be at peace.

Sharing of the Peace

May the peace of God be with you.

And also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of God’s peace.

Scripture  Mark 9:38-41 Jane Park

John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.

Scripture James 5:13-18

Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest.

Response  Holy Wisdom, Holy Word:

Thanks be to God!

Gentle is the way of Jesus: gentle is the healing soul

Bandaging the wounds of conflict, making peace, and making whole;

Gentle is the loving purpose calling us to live this part,

By the chemistry of kindness changing our ungentle heart.

Inner violence besets us, inner sickness, born of strife:

Lost, our innocence as children, lost, the focus of our life,

Hungry in a world of plenty, thirsty in the showering rain,

Searching for a sense of meaning, seeking soul food to sustain.

Save us God, from what consumes us, save us from the selves we hate,

Bring us back into your household, to the home you would create;

Stir in us the daily graces that allow your way to start,

Keeping company with Jesus, changing our ungentle heart.

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

We cannot measure how you heal

Or answer every sufferer’s prayer,

Yet we believe your grace responds

Where faith and doubt unite to care.

Your hands, though bloodied on the cross,

Survive to hold and heal and warn,

To carry all through death to life

And cradle children yet unborn.

The pain that will not go away,

The guilt that clings from things long past,

The fear of what the future holds,

Are present as if meant to last.

But present too is love which tends

The hurt we never hoped to find,

The private agonies inside,

The memories that haunt the mind.

So some have come who need your help

And some have come to make amends,

As hands which shaped and saved the world

Are present in the touch of friends.

Lord, let your Spirit meet us here

To mend the body, mind, and soul,

To disentangle peace from pain,

And make your broken people whole.

Benediction   From Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals

by Shane Claiborne, Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, and Enuma Okoro

May the peace of Christ go with you: wherever he will send you.

May he guide you through the wilderness: protect you through the storm.

May he bring you home rejoicing: at the wonders he has shown you.

May he bring you home rejoicing: once again into our doors.
