  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

In the gospel of Luke, Jesus begins his ministry in a solitary way. But eventually, like all people with a world-changing idea, he assembles a team. Here, he finds Simon Peter.

You can join us for worship in our beautiful sanctuary, or right here online. Worship is live-streamed; videos are available here or on Youtube following the service. You are invited! You are always welcome!

My Lord! what a morning,
My Lord! what a morning!
Oh, my Lord, what a morning,
When the stars begin to fall.

You will hear the trumpet sound
To wake the nations underground,
Looking to my God’s right hand
When the stars begin to fall.

My Lord! what a morning,
My Lord! what a morning!
Oh, my Lord, what a morning,
When the stars begin to fall.

You will hear the sinner cry
To wake the nations underground,
Looking to my God’s right hand
When the stars begin to fall.

My Lord! what a morning,
My Lord! what a morning!
Oh, my Lord, what a morning,
When the stars begin to fall.

You will hear the Christian shout
To wake the nations underground,
Looking to my God’s right hand
When the stars begin to fall.

My Lord! what a morning,
My Lord! what a morning!
Oh, my Lord, what a morning,
When the stars begin to fall.

* Call to New Life

By virtue of our baptism, we are called to be a part of God’s ministry of love, justice, and peace. But it can be hard to discern exactly what our calling is, and our uncertainty can lead us into anxiety and anguish. Let us open our hearts for God’s healing.

* Prayer for Wholeness and Peace

Present God, we confess that we have made our callings into puzzles we must solve so that our lives will have meaning. We have reduced vocation into labor and have forgotten what it means to be called to virtue, and even love. We have falsely made our dignity dependent on our work and fallen prey to the lie that to hear you is to be near you.

[Silent Prayer]

And we pray,

Have mercy on us and forgive us, that we might be liberated into our true path in its own time. We pray in your holy name. Amen.

* Words of Assurance

Let your soul receive this rest:

The Divine presence remains near as we locate the path that feels right.

Receive forgiveness and be guided into your deepest longings and beliefs

as you decide how to spend your days.

When self-distrust begins to eclipse our callings,

let God steady us toward what is good and true and beautiful,

now and forever.

Thanks be to God. Amen.

* Sharing of the Peace

God calls us to what is good and true and beautiful.

Let those things be our pathway to peace.

May the peace of God be with you.

And also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of God’s peace.

Scripture    Isaiah 6:1-8

Isaiah is the prophet whose words gave comfort when the people were afflicted, and words that afflicted their consciences when they were comfortable. He waits until chapter 6 to tell the story of God’s calling him to his life’s work.

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, beginning at chapter 6, verse 1.

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”

O Master, let me walk with you

In lowly paths of service true.

Tell me your secret,

Help me bear the strain of toil,

The fret of care.

O Master, let me walk with you.

O help the slow of heart to move

By some clear, winning word of love.

O Savior, teach me the wayward feet to stay,

And guide them in the homeward way.

O let me walk with you.

Teach me your patience, still with thee

In closer, dearer company,

In work that keeps faith sweet and strong,

In trust that triumphs over wrong.

In hope that sends a shining ray

Far down the future’s broadening way;

In peace that only you can give

With you, O Master, let me live.

Scripture Luke 5:1-11 (NRSVUE)

A reading from the gospel according to Luke, beginning at chapter 5, verse 1.

Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

Sermon “Yes, You”

Ordinations and Installation of Ruling Elder Andrew Vincent Tunison

Sentences of Scripture

There are varieties of gifts, but it is the same Spirit who gives them.

There are different ways of serving God,

but it is the same Lord who is served.

God works through each person in a unique way,

but it is God’s purpose that is accomplished.

To each is given a gift of the Spirit

to be used for the common good.

Together we are the body of Christ, and individually members of it.

Statement on Ordination

We are all called into the church of Jesus Christ by baptism and marked as Christ’s own by the Holy Spirit. This is our common calling, to be disciples of Jesus Christ and servants of our servant Lord.

Within the community of the church, some are called to particular service as as ruling elders. Ordination is Christ’s gift to the church, assuring that his ministry continues among us. Through ordination, God provides for acts of care and compassion to the world, for the ordering and governance of the church, and for the preaching of the Word and celebration of the Sacraments.

Presentation

Clerk of Session: Representing the one holy, catholic, and apostolic church, the session of Union Presbyterian Church now ordains Andrew Tunison as ruling elder, and installs him to active service in this congregation.

Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Covenant

Pastor: In baptism we are all called to the God’s ministry of love, justice, and peace. Let us, therefore, reaffirm our baptismal vows, renouncing all that opposes God and God’s rule, and affirming the faith of the Christ’s universal church.

Trusting in the gracious mercy of God,

do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world?

I do.

Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as Lord and Savior, trusting in his grace and love?

I do.

Will you be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his word and showing his love?

I will, with God’s help.

Profession of Faith

With the whole church, let us confess our faith:

Do you believe in God, the Father almighty?

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Thanksgiving for Baptism

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Gracious and eternal God, with joy we give you thanks and praise. We praise you for sending Jesus your Son, who was baptized in the waters of the Jordan and who was anointed as the Christ by your Holy Spirit.

We rejoice that you have claimed us in our baptism and anointed us for service in Christ’s name, and that by your grace we are born anew.

By your Holy Spirit renew us, that we may be empowered to do your will and continue forever in the risen life of Christ, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

Constitutional Questions

Andrew, in baptism you were claimed by the love of God, clothed in the grace of Jesus Christ, and anointed by the Holy Spirit to share Christ’s mission in the world. Now you are called by God through the voice of the church for new service and ministry in Jesus’ name.

In accordance with the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (USA), show your commitment to this calling by responding to these questions.

Do you trust in the Lord Jesus Christ your Savior, acknowledge him to be Lord of all and Head of the Church, and through him believe in one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?

I do.

Do you accept the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be, by the power of the Holy Spirit, the unique and authoritative witness to Jesus Christ in the Church Universal, and God’s Word to you?

I do.

Do you sincerely believe and adopt the essential tenets of the Reformed faith, as expressed in the confessions of our church, and authentic and reliable expositions of what scripture leads us to believe and do, and will you be instructed and led by those confessions as you lead the people of God?

I do and I will.

Will you fulfill your ministry in obedience to Jesus Christ, under the authority of scripture, and be continually guided by our confessions?

I will.

Will you be governed by our church’s polity, and will you abide by its discipline? Will you be a friend among your colleagues in ministry, working with them, subject to the ordering of God’s will and Spirit?

I will.

Will you in your own life seek to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, love your neighbors, and work for the reconciliation of the world?

I will.

Do you promise to further the peace, unity, and purity of the church?

I do.

Will you pray for and seek to serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love?

I will.

Will you be a faithful ruling elder, watching over the people, watching over the people, providing for their nurture, worship, and service? Will you share in governance and discipline, serving in councils of the church; and in your ministry will you try to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ?

I will.

Clerk of Session Questions to the Congregation

Clerk of Session: Do we, the members of the church, Andrew as a ruling elder, chosen by God through the voice of this congregation to lead us in the way of Jesus Christ?

We do.

Clerk of Session: Do we agree to pray for him, to encourage him, to respect his decisions, and to follow as he, along with other members of the session, guides us, serving Jesus Christ who alone is Head of the Church?

We do.

Laying on of Hands for Ordination

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Gracious and eternal God, with joy we give you all thanks and praise. We are grateful for our ancestors in the faith who followed without fear, placing their trust in you alone. We thank you for men and women in every age who have nurtured your people in faith and faithfulness.

Above all we praise you for Jesus Christ, who came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life to set others free. Anointed by your Holy Spirit, he proclaimed your reign on earth, revealing your saving love in all he said and did.

[The congregation is invited to raise their hands in blessing.]

Gracious God, pour out your Spirit upon your servant Andrew, whom you called by baptism as your own. Grant him the same mind that was in Jesus Christ. Help him to rely on the gifts of your Spirit and to follow Christ faithfully in this calling.

In the walk of faith and for the work of ministry, give to all your servants a spirit of truthfulness, that they may show the compassion of Christ in the actions of daily living and rightly govern your people. Give them gladness and strength, discipline and hope, humility, humor, and courage. Give us all an abiding sense of your presence.

Gracious God, pour out your Spirit of power and truth upon the whole church, that we may be for you a holy people baptized to serve you in the world. Ground us in the gospel. Secure our hope in Christ, strengthen our service to the outcast and those in need, and increase our love for one another.

Show us the transforming power of your grace in our life together, that we may be effective servants of the gospel, offering a compelling witness in the world to the Good News of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Declaration of Ordination and Installation

Andrew, you are now a Ruling Elder, ordained and installed to a ministry of governance in the Church of Jesus Christ and for this congregation.

Welcome

Charge to the Newly Ordained and Installed

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil; hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal; be ardent in spirit; serve the Lord.  Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; pursue hospitality to strangers.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another…If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
