Palm Sunday

  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

Jesus enters Jerusalem, and the crowds show their love and admiration for him. In less than a week, he will be crucified.

Join us for worship this morning in our beautiful sanctuary or here, online, if you are at home or on the road. You are invited! We will lift our voices with the crowds crying “Hosanna!,” and ponder the mystery of the cross.

Welcome                                                  Rev. Pat Raube

* Call to Worship                                             Doug Moore

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!

Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!

Lo, your king comes to you;

triumphant and victorious is he,

humble and riding on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

* Scripture Matthew 21:1-11                                                  Rev. Pat Raube

When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately.” This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet:

“Tell the daughter of Zion,
Look, your king is coming to you,
    humble and mounted on a donkey,
        and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!
    Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”

* Hymn #265 W & R   “All Glory, Laud, and Honor”     (Public Domain)

All glory, laud and honor
To you, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.

You are the King of Israel,
And David’s royal Son,
Now in the Lord’s name coming,
Our King and blessed One!

All glory, laud and honor
To you, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.

The company of angels
Are praising you on high,
Creation and all mortals
In chorus make reply:

All glory, laud and honor
To you, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.

The people of the Hebrews
With palms before you went;
Our praise and prayer and anthems
Before you we present:

All glory, laud and honor
To you, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.

To you, before your passion,
They sang their hymns of praise;
To you, now high exalted,
Our melody we raise:

All glory, laud and honor
To you, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.

As you received their praises,
Accept the prayers we bring,
For you delight in goodness,
O good and gracious King!

All glory, laud and honor
To you, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.

Prayer of the Day                                                   Rev. Pat Raube

Scripture Reading   Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29                  Doug Moore

Give thanks to the Lord, for the Lord is good;
     God’s mercy endures forever!

Let Israel now declare,
     “God’s mercy endures forever!”

Open for me the gates of righteousness,
     I will enter them and give thanks to the Lord.

This is the gate of the Lord;
     here the righteous may enter.

I give thanks to you, for you have answered me
     and you have become my salvation.
The stone that the builders rejected
     has become the chief cornerstone.
By the Lord’s has this been done;
     it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made;
     let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Hosanna! O Lord, save us!
     We pray to you Lord, prosper our days!

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
    We bless you from the house of the Lord.
The Lord is God, and has given us light.
Form a procession with branches,
     up to the horns of the altar.

You are my God, and I will thank you;
     you are my God, and I will exalt you.

Give thanks to the Lord, for the Lord is good;
     God’s mercy endures forever!

Scripture Reading  Philippians 2:5-11

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

who, though he existed in the form of God,
    did not regard equality with God
    as something to be grasped,

but emptied himself,
    taking the form of a slave,
    assuming human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a human,

   he humbled himself
    and became obedient to the point of death—
    even death on a cross.

Therefore God exalted him even more highly
    and gave him the name
    that is above every other name,

so that at the name given to Jesus
    every knee should bend,
    in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue should confess
    that Jesus Christ is Lord,
    to the glory of God the Father.

Response   We do not live by bread alone,

but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

Thanks be to God!

Sermon      ”The Same Mind”                           Rev. Pat Raube

* An Affirmation of Faith from the Confession of 1967 (unison)

In Jesus of Nazareth true humanity was realized once for all. Jesus, a Palestinian Jew, lived among his own people and shared their needs, temptations, joys, and sorrows. He expressed the love of God in word and deed and became a brother to all kinds of sinful people. But his complete obedience led him into conflict with his people. His life and teaching judged their goodness, religious aspirations, and national hopes. Many rejected him and demanded his death. In giving himself freely for them he took upon himself the judgment under which all people stand convicted. God raised him from the dead, vindicating him as Messiah and Lord. The victim of sin became victor, and won the victory over sin  and death for all.

Your only Son, no sin to hide,

But you have sent him from your side,

To walk upon this guilty sod,

And to become the Lamb of God.

O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God,

I love the holy Lamb of God!

O wash me in his precious blood—

My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

Your gift of love, they crucified,

They laughed and scorned him as he died,

The humble King they named a fraud

And sacrificed the Lamb of God.

O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God,

I love the holy Lamb of God!

O wash me in his precious blood—

My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

I was so lost, I should have died,

But you have brought me to your side,

To be led by your staff and rod,

And to be called a lamb of God.

O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God,

I love the holy Lamb of God!

O wash me in his precious blood—

My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer (Traditional Version)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
