Trinity Sunday: Wisdom and Our God

  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

Once every year the church devotes a Sunday to a doctrine: the doctrine of the Trinity. Join us this morning as we explore some of the Biblical roots of this understanding of God.

Join us for worship in our sanctuary, or right here if you are worshiping from home or on the road. You can also find the live-stream on our YouTube page. Worship videos are available Sunday after 1 PM. All are welcome!

Glory be to God, Creator,

Glory be to God the Son,

Glory be to God the Spirit,

Known as Three, yet God the One.

As it was in the beginning,

It is now and so shall be

In a world without an ending,

Glory through eternity.

Holy, holy God Almighty,

Holy, holy Prince of Peace,

Holy, holy Wind of Presence,

Holy, holy, holy.  Amen.

Call to New Life

Prayer for Wholeness and Peace

God of grace, love, and communion:

we confess that we have failed to love you

with all our heart, soul, and mind;

and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

We ignore your commandments,

stray from your way, and follow other gods.

(a time of silent prayer)

Have mercy on us.

Forgive our sin and raise us to new life

that we may serve your faithfully

and give honor to your holy name. Amen.

Words of Assurance

With the whole church:

We affirm that we are made in God’s image,

befriended by Christ, and empowered by the Spirit.

With people everywhere:

We affirm God’s goodness at the heart of humanity,

planted more deeply than all that is wrong.

With all creation:

We celebrate the miracle and wonder of life and the unfolding purposes of God, forever at work in ourselves and the world. Thanks be to God. Amen!

Sharing of the Peace

May the peace of God be with you.

And also with you.

Let us share a sign of God’s peace with one another.

Scripture   Psalm 8

O Lord, our Lord,
    how majestic is your name in all the earth!—

you whose glory is chanted above the heavens

   out of the mouths of infants and children;
you have set up a fortress against your enemies,
    to silence the foe and the avenger.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
    the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,
what are mere mortals that you should mindful of them,
    human beings that you should care for them?

Yet you have made them little less than divine;
    with glory and honor you crown them.
You have made them rule over the works of your hands;
    you have put all things under their feet,
all flocks and cattle,
    even the wild beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, the fish of the sea,
    and whatever passes along the paths of the sea.

O Lord, our Lord,
    how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Scripture  Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31                           Rev. Pat Raube

Does not wisdom call
    and understanding raise her voice?
On the heights, beside the way,
    at the crossroads she takes her stand;
beside the gates in front of the town,
    at the entrance of the portals she cries out:
“To you, O people, I call,
    and my cry is to all who live.

“The Lord created me at the beginning of his work,
    the first of his acts of long ago.
Ages ago I was set up,
    at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
When there were no depths I was brought forth,
    when there were no springs abounding with water.
Before the mountains had been shaped,
    before the hills, I was brought forth,
when he had not yet made earth and fields
    or the world’s first bits of soil.
When he established the heavens, I was there;
    when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
when he made firm the skies above,
    when he established the fountains of the deep,
when he assigned to the sea its limit,
    so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
   then I was beside him, like a master worker,
and I was daily his delight,
    playing before him always,
playing in his inhabited world
    and delighting in the human race.

Come and seek the ways of Wisdom,

She who danced when earth was new.

Follow closely what she teaches,

For her words are right and true.

Wisdom clears the path to justice,

Showing us what love must do.

Listen to the voice of Wisdom,

Crying in the marketplace.

Hear the Word made flesh among us,

Full of glory, truth, and grace.

When the word takes root and ripens,

Peace and righteousness embrace.

Sister Wisdom, come, assist us;

Nurture all who seek rebirth.

Spirit-guide and close companion,

Bring to light our sacred worth.

Free us to become your people,

Holy friends of God and earth.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

God is One, unique and holy,
Endless dance of love and light,
Only source of mind and body,
Star-cloud, atom, day and night:
Everything that is or could be
Tells God's anguish and delight.

God is Oneness-by-Communion:
Never distant or alone,
At the heart of all belonging:
Loyal friendship, loving home,
Common mind and shared agreement,
Common loaf and sung Shalom.

Through the pain that loving Wisdom
Could foresee, but not forestall,
God is One though torn and anguished
In the Christ's forsaken call,
One through death and resurrection,
One in Spirit, One for all.
