Maundy Thursday

  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

On the night on which he is betrayed, Jesus sits at table with his closest friends and followers. While there he amazes them with an act of humility and love.

Join us on this night on which we recall the Lord’s Supper with his friends, and gather around the table ourselves. If you are joining us from home via live-stream, you may want to bring some bread and fruit of the vine (juice or wine) with you, and perhaps you will want to light a candle.

Worship with us in our sanctuary, or join us here by live-stream. We are coming to the consummation of this season of love and grace, and you are invited!

Call to Worship        Cindy Surrena

… Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest

Stay with us, for the day is ending.

Bring to our house your poverty.

For then shall we be rich.

Bring to our house your pain,

That sharing it we may also share your joy.

Bring to our house your understanding of us,

That we may be freed to learn more of you.

Bring to our house all those

Who hurry or hobble behind you,

That we may meet you as the Savior of all.

Bring to our house your Holy Spirit,

That this may be a cradle of love.

With friend, with stranger,

With neighbor, with the well-known,

Be among us tonight,

For the doors of our house we open,

And the doors of our hearts we leave ajar.

Hymn  #257 W & R (ORGAN)

“What Wondrous Love Is This”

(Public Domain)

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul,

What wondrous love is this, O my soul!

What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss

To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,

To bear the dreadful curse for my soul!

When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down,

When I was sinking down, sinking down;

When I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown.

Christ laid aside his crown for my soul, for my soul,

Christ laid aside his crown for my soul!

To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing,

To God and to the Lamb I will sing!

To God and to the Lamb, who is the great “I AM,”

While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing,

While millions join the theme, I will sing!

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on!

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be,

And through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,

And through eternity I’ll sing on!

Call to Wholeness

Prayer for Wholeness and Peace

Loving God, you pour out grace upon us exactly as we are,

but we confess we are suspicious and react from fear of scarcity.

Jesus invited his friends to take their shoes off

and receive the care their bodies needed,

but we sit on our heels.

We sort bodies into worthy and unworthy ones

to mask our insecurities.

We reject and punish the bodies of those who are not like us,

or those that do not fit the cultural norms,

even when these bodies are our very own.

God, remind us that we are made in your image.

Help us learn to receive from your abundance

so we can share all that we have with others.

Let us see that the cups we longingly hold out

are already full.

May they overflow so that all will have enough!

In your Holy Name we pray. Amen.

Assurance of God’s Love

Jesus transforms our confusion and rejection

into joy and connection.

With God’s help and mercy, we can offer abundance

to one another and with all Creation.

In Jesus Christ we are loved and befriended by God.

Thanks be to God.

Sharing of the Peace

The peace of God be with you this night:

And also with you.

Let us share a sign of peace.

Scripture  Psalm 116:1-2, 12-19

I love the Lord, who has heard
my voice and listened to my supplications.
For the Lord has given ear to me,
    whenever I called.

How shall I repay the Lord
for all the good things God has done for me?
I will lift the cup of salvation
and call upon the name of the Lord,
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all God’s people.
Precious in your sight, O Lord,
is the death of your servants.
O Lord, truly I am your servant;
I am your servant, the child of your handmaid.
You have freed me from my bonds.
I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call upon the name of the Lord.
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all God’s people,
in the courts of the Lord’s house,
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!

Scripture  Luke 22:7-20; John 13:1, 34-35  Rev. Pat Raube

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us that we may eat it.” They asked him, “Where do you want us to make preparations for it?” “Listen,” he said to them, “when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house he enters and say to the owner of the house, ‘The teacher asks you, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’ He will show you a large room upstairs, already furnished. Make preparations for us there.” So they went and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.

When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him. He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

John 13:1, 34-35

Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

[Jesus said,] I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Response: Holy Wisdom, Holy Word:

Thanks be to God.

An upper room did our Lord prepare

For those he loved until the end:

And his disciples still gather there

To celebrate their risen friend.

A lasting gift Jesus gave his own:

To share his bread, his loving cup.

Whatever burdens may bow us down,

He by his cross shall lift us up.

THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

INVITATION

At your last supper, sharing bread and the fruit of the vine,

You invited your friends to share your journey.

Like many grains of wheat becoming one loaf of bread,

You invite us to become one body with you.

Here tonight, through bread and the fruit of the vine,

We renew our journey with you.

Here, through bread and the fruit of the vine,

We renew our unity with one another,

and with all who have gone before us.

Through bread and the fruit of the vine,

We renew our communion with the earth

and our connection with the broken ones of this world.

So come, taste these gifts of the earth and work of human hands,

Food of both earth and heaven.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts!

We lift them up to God.

Let us give thanks to God.

It is right to give both thanks and praise.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord,

God willing to be weak, human, and vulnerable,

Heaven and earth of full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest!

THE STORY OF THE LAST SUPPER

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Jesus took the bread,

He took the bread and blest it,

Then gave it to his disciples,

He gave it to them saying:

“Take and eat this bread.

This bread is my own body.

Do this and remember,

Remember me and eat.”

Jesus took the cup,

He gook the cup, gave thanks,

Then gave it to his disciples,

He gave it to them saying:

“Take and drink this cup,

This cup is my own blood,

Do this and remember,

Remember me and drink.”

Thanks to God forever.

THE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING (Unison)

Holy Mystery, through communion we unite our bodies with your body, and in unity we gain strength and hope. We give thanks for your transforming love. Like the sacraments, we know that love is a doing, and so we ask for your help to turn this nourishment into love for all we meet. We pray in your holy name. Amen.

“My Song is Love Unknown”

My song is love unknown,
My Savior’s love to me,
Love to the loveless shown
That they might lovely be.
O who am I
That for my sake
My Lord should take
Frail flesh, and die?

Christ came from heaven's throne
Salvation to bestow,
But people scorned and none
The longed-for Christ would know.
But O my Friend,
My Friend indeed,
Who at my need
His life did spend!

Sometimes they strew His way,
And His sweet praises sing,
Resounding all the way
Hosannas to their King,
Then “Crucify!”
Is all their breath,
And for His death
They thirst and cry.

They rise, and needs will have
My dear Lord made away;
A murderer they save,
The Prince of life they slay.
Yet steadfast He
To suffering goes,
That He His foes
From thence might free.

Here might I stay and sing,
No story so divine:
Never was love, dear King,
Never was grief like Thine.
This is my Friend,
In whose sweet
Could gladly spend.

Benediction

Jesus chose to use his final hours to establish intimate and profound physical connections with his friends.

In the midst of this connection, he offered a new commandment:

to love one another as he loves us.

This is not an abstract, sentimental love.

This is bread-breaking, foot-washing, messy love.

We have been nourished at the Table,

and now we go out into the world to live out

Jesus’s commandment.

As we leave this place,

may the presence of the Creator, the Redeemer, and the Sustainer

fill the nooks and crannies of our lives.

Go in love!

We go out together in love. Amen.
