Gratitude First

  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

This morning we find Jesus in a healing mode…ten are healed, and only one returns to give thanks. How does gratitude function in our lives? It’s so easy to be joyful or relieved when something wonderful happens. Do we remember that God is a part of the equation?

Join us for worship in our sanctuary, or right here, if you are at home or on the road. You can also find the live-stream and worship videos on the Union Presbyterian Church of Endicott YouTube page! Worship videos are available Sunday after 1:00 PM.

Welcome                                                      Rev. Pat Raube

Call to Worship

Ours is the God who Created the sun, moon, and stars:

Thanks be to God!

Ours is the God who formed humanity from the dust of the earth:

Thanks be to God!

Ours is the God who loves us with an everlasting love:

Thanks be to our generous God!

Hymn  #56 W & R  “Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above”  (Public Domain)

Sing praise to God who reigns above,
The God of all creation,
The God of power, the God of love,
The God of our salvation.
My soul with comfort rich he fills,
And every grief he gently stills:
To God all praise and glory!

What God’s almighty power has made,
In mercy he is keeping;
By morning glow or evening shade
His eye is never sleeping.
And where he rules in kingly might,
There all is just and all is right:
To God all praise and glory!

We sought the Lord in our distress;
O God, in mercy hear us.
Our Savior saw our helplessness
And came with peace to cheer us.
For this we thank and praise the Lord,
Who is by one and all adored:
To God all praise and glory!

Let all who name Christ’s holy name
Give God the praise and glory.
Let all who know his power proclaim
Aloud the wondrous story.
Cast every idol from its throne;
The Lord is God, and he alone:
To God all praise and glory!

Call to New Life                                               Peg Williams

Prayer for Wholeness and Peace

Where do we begin, generous God? With our creation? With our lives? With our unique constellations of talents and skills? With having enough to live on? With having enough to share? All of it is from you, loving God. All of it was given before we thought to ask. And yet we fail to thank you, fail to even consider the source of each blessing—eyes opening to a new day, a pillow for our heads when we are weary. Thank you God. Heal our ungrateful hearts. Let us practice gratitude first. In your holy name we pray. Amen.

Words of Assurance

With the whole church:

We affirm that we are made in God’s image,

befriended by Christ, and empowered by the Spirit.

With people everywhere:

We affirm God’s goodness at the heart of humanity,

planted more deeply than all that is wrong.

With all creation:

We celebrate the miracle and wonder of life and the unfolding purposes of God, forever at work in ourselves and the world. Thanks be to God. Amen!

Sharing of the Peace

May the peace of God be with you.

And also with you.

Let us share a sign of God’s peace with one another.

Scripture  Psalm 66:1-12

Be joyful in God, all you lands;

    be joyful, all the earth.
Sing the glory of God’s name;
    sing the glory of God’s praise.
Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
    Because of your great strength, your enemies cringe before you.
All the earth bows down before you,
    sings to you, sings out your name.” Selah

Come now, and see the works of God,
    how awesome are God’s deeds toward all people.
God turned the sea into dry land,
so that they went through the water on foot,
    and there we rejoiced in God.

Ruling forever in might, God keeps watch over the nations;
    let no rebels exalt themselves. Selah

Bless our God, you peoples;
    let the sound of praise be heard.
Our God has kept us among the living
    and has not allowed our feet to slip.
For you, O God, have tested us;
    you have tried us just as silver is tried.
You brought us into the net;
    you laid heavy burdens upon our backs;
You let people ride over our heads;
we went through fire and water;
    but you have brought us out into a place of refreshment.

Scripture  Luke 17:11-19

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten men with a skin disease approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus’s feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? So where are the other nine? Did none of them return to give glory to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”

Lord, we come together now to worship in this place.

Lord, we come in gratitude for Your unfailing grace.

O Lord, we come together now, our hearts and voices one,

Lifting high our songs of praise for all that You have done.

We sing alleluia, Lord, we give You thanks.

Alleluia, Lord, we give You thanks.

Lord, we come together now to glorify Your name.

O Lord, we come to offer You the sacrifice of praise.

O Lord, we come with thankful hearts for wonders You have done.

Every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand of love.

We sing alleluia, Lord, we give You thanks.

Alleluia, Lord, we give You thanks.

Now thank we all our God

With heart and hands and voices,

Who wondrous things has done,

In whom His world rejoices.

We sing alleluia, Lord, we give You thanks.

Alleluia, Lord, we give You thanks.

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Eternal Spirit of the living Christ,
We know not how to ask or what to say;
We only know our need, as deep as life,
And only you can teach us how to pray.

Prayer of Dedication

Hymn   #14 W & R   “Now Thank We All Our God”  (Public Domain)

Now thank we all our God
With heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
In whom his world rejoices;
Who, from our mothers’ arms,
Has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours today.

O may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessed peace to cheer us;
And keep us in his grace
And guide us when perplexed,
And free us from all ills
In this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God
The Father now be given,
The Son, and him who reigns
With them in highest heaven,
The one eternal God
Whom earth and heaven adore;
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.

Benediction

Go into the world in peace.

Have courage!

Hold fast to what is good.

Return no one evil for evil.

Strengthen the faint-hearted,

support the weak,

help the suffering.

Honor all people.

Love and serve the Lord your God,

rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.

And may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and the love of God,

and the sweet communion of the Holy Spirit,

be with each and all of us,

This day and forevermore.

The Spirit is among us, so go in peace.

Thanks be to God. Amen
