Trinity Sunday: Holy, Holy, Holy

  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

Isaiah’s vision of God in the temple will make your hair stand on end. From the sheer enormity of the Presence— Isaiah can only see the hem of God’s robe—to the swooping about of terrifying seraphim, to the blistering call to prophetic ministry, it is an unforgettable scene, and reminds us that God is beyond our wildest imaginings.

Join us this day for Worship in the sanctuary at 10:30 AM, simultaneously live-streamed! Video available immediately afterward.

We require pre-registration for worship, masks covering the nose and mouth for those over the age of 2, and social distancing for all who wish to attend. We will be so glad to see you. You are invited!

**Worship begins at 6:49 in the stream video.

Welcome  Rev. Pat Raube

Welcome, welcome back, and welcome home,

even if this is your first time with us.

Trinity Sunday is the only day in the church calendar

that is devoted to a point of doctrine.

There is an old saw I repeat every Trinity Sunday, and you get to hear it today.

This is the day when the young, newly ordained associate pastor preaches,

and the seasoned, older pastor sits to one side with a notepad,

ticking off all the heresies, one by one.

I personally repeated several heresies during Bible Study this past Tuesday.

Today, during our meditation, let’s see whether we can’t move, together,

past heresy anxiety,

and into awe, into wonder, into the many ways throughout history

God has reached out to God’s people.

We are so glad you’re with us on this journey.

Invocation   Brianna Attey

O Blessed Trinity, in whom we know

the maker of all things seen and unseen,

the Savior of all both near and far:

By your Spirit enable us to worship your divine majesty,

so that with all the company of heaven,

we may magnify your holy name, saying: Holy, Holy, Holy.

Glory to you, O Lord most high. Amen.

Hymn  #148 W & R

“Come, Thou Almighty King”

(Public Domain)

Singing:  Chris Bartlette, Colin DeLap, Heather Ingraham, Judy Marsh, Mary, Doug Moore, Pat Raube, Peg Williams.

Come, thou Almighty King, help us thy name to sing, help us to praise:

Father, all glorious, o’er all victorious,

Come and reign over us, Ancient of Days.

Come, thou Incarnate Word, gird on thy mighty sword, our prayer attend:

Come, and thy people bless, and give thy word success:

Spirit of holiness, on us descend.

Come, Holy Comforter, thy sacred witness bear in this glad hour:

Thou who almighty art, now rule in every heart,

And ne’er from us depart, Spirit of power.

To thee, great One in Three, eternal praises be hence, evermore!

Thy sovereign majesty may we in glory see,

And to eternity love and adore.

Call to New Life

For God so loved the world, that God came in Jesus Christ, to show us the way, the truth, and the life. Let us open ourselves to God’s new life.

Prayer for Wholeness and Peace

God of grace, love, and communion, we confess that we have failed to love you with all our heart and soul, mind and strength; and to love our neighbor as ourselves. We ignore your commandments, stray from your way, and follow other gods.

Heal our wandering hearts; set us on your path and raise us to new life, that we may serve you faithfully, and give honor to your name.

~silence~

Assurance of God’s Grace

God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save it. By the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the sweet communion of the Holy Spirit, we are made new. Thanks be to God! Amen.

Sharing of the Peace

We feel the peace that God has given us, and we want to share it with one another. Let us do that now. May God’s peace be with each of us. Let us share a sign of peace with one another.

Scripture Romans 8:14-17 Brianna Attey

A reading from the letter of Paul to Romans, beginning at chapter 8, verse 14.

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Prayer:
Dear God,
Thank you for being our loving Parent, and making us your children.
Thank you for our brother Jesus, who shows us your way.
Thank you for your Holy Spirit, who is always with us.
We pray in your holy name. Amen.

Scripture Isaiah 6:1-8  Rev. Pat Raube

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah, beginning at chapter 6, verse 1.

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.” The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke.

And I said: “Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”

God is One, unique and holy, endless dance of love and light,

Only source of mind and body, star-cloud, atom, day or night:

Every thing that is or could be tells God’s anguish and delight.

God is Oneness-by-Communion, never single or alone;

All togetherness including—friendship, family and home,

Common mind and shared agreement, common loaf and sung Shalom.

God is One through desolation—blindness, treason, blood and gall;

One, though torn by separation in the Son’s forsaken call;

One through death and resurrection; One in Spirit, One for all.

God is One, unique and holy, endless dance of love and light,

Only source of mind and body, star-cloud, atom, day or night:

Every thing that is or could be tells God’s anguish and delight.

Prayers of the People

Let us approach God with confidence, the One who hears our prayers as the requests of beloved children. Let us pray.

Holy One, who came as a child,

we pray for your children everywhere.

For those who are hungry, we pray for nourishment…

For those who are fleeing, we pray for safety…

For those who are ill, we pray for your healing…

For those whose lives are turned upside down by Covid-19, including the sick and the caregivers, we pray for your strength…

For those who are grieving, we pray for your peace…

For those who are suffering, we pray for your presence…

For those who feed the hungry, who give water to the thirsty, who welcome the stranger, who clothe the naked, who visit the sick, who minister to the imprisoned, we pray for strength and safety…

Holy Three, whose innermost life offers us the pattern of community,

we pray for communities everywhere.

For those communities ravaged by Covid-19, including the essential workers and those in nursing homes, prisons, and all vulnerable populations,

we pray for your powerful presence…

For those who are divided, we pray for unity…

For those who are isolated, we pray for connection…

For those who are afraid, we pray for your courage…

For those who are frustrated, we pray for new hope…

We pray especially for those in our own community, who suffer this day…

Holy Three-in One and One-in-Three,

Bless us in the work of faith, that we might be truly faithful.

Nourish us in the labor of love, that we might show your love.

Keep our hope steadfast,

that we might know your grace, and your peace, and your joy,

as we await your coming reign of justice and overwhelming love;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who taught us to pray,

debtors, trespassers, and sinners together:

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Call for Offering

God is so good. We stand in wonder at the love poured down upon us. And we stand, too, ready to serve—with our time, with our talents, and with our treasure. Let us bring our gifts, and see what God might do with them.

Prayer of Dedication

Holy, Holy, Holy God: heaven and earth are filled with your glory. They are also filled with a world that longs, thirsts for you. Help us, O God, to use our gifts to let your love be known, near and far, in all the ways that matter. We pray in your holy name. Amen.

Hymn  #136 W & R

“Holy, Holy, Holy”

(Public Domain)

Singing:  Chris Bartlette, Colin DeLap, Heather Ingraham, Judy Marsh, Mary, Doug Moore, Pat Raube, Peg Williams.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.

Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,

Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;

Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,

Which wert and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide thee,

Though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see,

Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,

Perfect in power, in love and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God, Almighty!

All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea;

Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Benediction

Go into the world in peace.

Have courage!

Hold fast to what is good.

Return no one evil for evil.

Strengthen the faint-hearted,

support the weak,

help the suffering.

Honor all people.

Love and serve the Lord your God,

rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.

And may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and the love of God,

and the sweet communion of the Holy Spirit,

be with each and all of us,

This day and forevermore.

The Triune God is with us, so go in peace.

Thanks be to God. Amen
