Who Do They Say I Am? Crucifixion as Ransom and Redemption

  • Union Presbyterian Church 200 E Main St Endicott, NY, 13760 United States (map)

When Jesus asks his disciples to tell him how the crowds are identifying him, they come up with all kinds of figures— John the Baptist, Elijah. They even call him, Messiah. In time, followers of Jesus’ way began to understand him as Redeemer. How does this image connect with the events of Good Friday?

Throughout the season of Lent, we will be exploring the language and images used to describe that central Good Friday event, the crucifixion. You are invited to join us on this Lenten journey!

When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down,

when I was sinking down, sinking down,

when I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown,

Christ laid aside his crown for my soul, for my soul,

Christ laid aside his crown for my soul.

Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart;

Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart.

In my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart.

Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart, in my heart;

Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart.

In my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart.

Lord, I want to be more holy in my heart, in my heart;

Lord, I want to be more holy in my heart.

In my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be more holy in my heart.

Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart, in my heart;

Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart.

In my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart.
