Unraveled 6: God's Justice Unraveled

Our God longs for justice. But humans keep unraveling it.

Hymn “Pharaoh Was a Brutal Tyrant”

Lyrics: Copyright 2019 Stephen M. Fearing | www.stephenmfearing.com

Music: Alexander Johnson's Tennessee Harmony, 1818 (Public Domain)

Pharaoh was a brutal tyrant, caught up in his thirsty greed.

Long the Israelites had suffered so they cried out to be freed.

Pharaoh worshiped high production, looking for the bottom line.

All his subjects did his bidding, kneeling down before his shrine.

Moses joined his brother, Aaron, to deliver God’s demand.

They were sent to guide God’s people, bring them to the promised land.

When God called for Pharaoh’s action, he objected from the start.

Pharaoh failed to follow justice, callousing his hardened heart.

Pharaoh laughed at God’s commandment, he refused to let them go.

When he stood out by the banks he saw the river’s bloody flow.

Though he could have stopped the terror, ending Egypt’s horrid pain,

Pharaoh chose to welcome violence, all to save his wretched reign.

We have Pharaohs all around us; maybe we are like him, too.

May we heed God’s call to kindness, may we see God’s grace ensue.

God will turn God’s sure attention to the place where there’s despair,

Let us join in God’s salvation for all people everywhere.

Turn our worship into witness in the sacrament of life;

Send us forth to love and serve you, bringing peace where there is strife.

Give us, Christ, your great compassion to forgive as you forgave;

May we still behold your image in the world you came to save.

Hymn # 618 R “Go Down, Moses”

Public Domain

When Israel was in Egypt’s land,

Let my people go;

Oppressed so hard they could not stand,

Let my people go.

Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt’s land;

Tell old Pharaoh: Let my people go!

The Lord told Moses what to do,

Let my people go;

To lead the Hebrew children through,

Let my people go.

Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt’s land;

Tell old Pharaoh: Let my people go!

They journeyed on at his command,

Let my people go;

And came at length to Canaan’s land,

Let my people go.

Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt’s land;

Tell old Pharaoh: Let my people go!

Oh, let us all from bondage flee,

Let my people go;

And let us all in Christ be free,

Let my people go.

Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt’s land;

Tell old Pharaoh: Let my people go!
